Making Space Studio Policies

The Making Space is a safe environment for you to create art with glass and other media. We ask that you be mindful of the Studio Etiquette, Glass Safety Rules, Studio Clean Up, and Grouting policies below.

Studio Etiquette

The Making Space is here for you to explore your creativity and we often have multiple small
groups working at the same time. So that everyone can enjoy their time at the Making Space,
please observe the following:

  • Be kind and courteous to everyone.

  • Classes, open studio times, and private events start on time and finish on time. If you are going to be late, please call us at 712-775-2035 as soon as possible.

  • Please respect all staff, instructors, and other persons using the Making Space.

  • Please observe all safety rules and staff or instructor directions. This is important not only for your own safety but the safety of others.

  • Please do not take materials from shelves or cabinets unless instructed to do so by a staff member. If you use equipment (e.g., glass cutter, ruler, wire cutter, etc.), please return it to where you found it when you are finished. We only have a limited number of some tools and you will need to share.

  • There may be other people creating in the Making Space while you are here. Like you, they are here to work on their project. If you have questions about a technique or project someone else is working on, please ask a staff member.

  • We have tools and other materials for use in your project. We will have out all of the materials you will need for your project. If you need something else (especially any additional glass products, please ask before you take any glass. We need to keep our mosaic glass separate from our glass used for fusing.

Glass Safety Rules

  • When anyone in the class is cutting glass, everyone in the class will wear prescription glasses or safety glasses. Glass can chip off and fly when it is cut with a tile cutter or nippers.

  • Instructors will demonstrate the proper use of all cutting tools to minimize injury. Please follow these instructions.

  • When washing or cleaning cut glass assume that the edges are sharp and will cut you.

  • Always be careful holding cut glass in your hands.

  • Never use your bare hands to sweep away glass shards on your work area. Many shards of glass are very small but can still cut you. Also, be mindful of resting elbows & arms on table.

  • You must wear safety googles and have long hair tied back when working with the glass grinder or soldering iron.

  • Soldering irons are hot and can burn you. Please assume every soldering iron you encounter is hot and act accordingly.

Fused Glass Firing

Your fused glass project is fired in our kiln. We endeavor to fire your piece as carefully as possible, but there are no guarantees when working with glass and a kiln. Piece that undergoes a single firing is typically ready for pick up in 7-10 days. If a project requires a second firing, it may take longer. Class descriptions will note whether it includes 1 or 2 firings.

Grouting Your Mosaic

Your mosaic must dry at least 48 hours before it can be grouted. The cost of grout is including in your class fee. For the Family Workshops, we will grout your pieces for you to pick up later. For all other classes, you will be given grout and instructions for you to grout your project at home or to come back to Artworks Studio and grout your project here. If we grout your project for you, there is an additional charge of $6.

Classroom Clean Up

  • You are responsible for cleaning up your workspace. Any tools or equipment you get out needs to be put back where you found them.

  • Unused glass and mosaic tiles must be sorted back into the proper containers.

  • Everything is labeled.

  • DO NOT MIX FUSING GLASS WITH ANY OTHER GLASS. This could cause serious damage to the kiln and other people’s projects in the future. If you are not sure ask the staff for help.

  • There is a brush and dust pan specifically for sweeping the table after working with glass.

  • Do not sweep across the table with your hands. Glass is sharp and you will cut yourself.

Cancellation Policy

We understand sometimes things come up that make it impossible for participants to attend a workshop. Class fees are nonrefundable. If you need to cancel please contact me as soon as possible and you will receive a 50% credit towards a future class. Failure to show up for a scheduled class does not constitute a cancellation and any refund credit is at the discretion of Artworks Studio. Class credits must be used within 1 year of issue.

Although we hate canceling classes, it is sometimes necessary and unavoidable. Our priority will be to reschedule the workshop in a timely manner if possible. If a registered participant is unable to attend on the rescheduled date they will be offered a store credit for a future class or a refund.

Waiver of Liability

I understand that Artworks Studio takes reasonable precautions to reduce risk and provide a safe, healthy and enjoyable experience for all. By registering for this class, I acknowledge that risks from participation in class activities exist and that I have allowed myself and/or my child to attend a Artworks Studio event knowing these risks and their possible consequences, including personal injury.
